Researchers at the University of Colorado Center for Integrative Medicine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have launched studies to examine the benefits of Charlotte’s Web, a strain of cannabis that contains very low levels of the psychoactive compound THC. The studies are the first to test the effects of Charlotte’s Web on sleep and anxiety, both of which can be major symptoms of schizophrenia. In its first-ever sleep study, the CU Boulder Sleep Laboratory has shown that giving people a highly potent, highly restricted strain of cannabis during the night improves sleep and reduces anxiety. Charlotte’s Web Holdings has announced a new partnership with the University of Colorado Boulder and its Center for Research and Education on Cannabis and Health (REACH). The university’s REACH Center will conduct a preclinical study on how hemp oil may affect sleep quality and anxiety. A joint study by Charlotte’s Web and the University of Colorado Boulder on the potential of CBD and CBN to promote better sleep (CNW Group/Charlotte’s Web Holdings, Inc). The research uses hemp products from Charlotte’s Web, including their full-spectrum hemp formulations that contain CBN, CBD and less than 0.3% THC. Monica Fleschner, M.D., Professor of Integrative Physiology and member of the University of Colorado Neuroscience Center, will lead the project and conduct the research in her stress physiology laboratory. There is a great need for sufficient controlled experimental studies to test the potential neural and physiological effects of cannabis-derived phytocannabinoids, Dr. Fleschner said. With support from CU REACH and Charlotte’s Web, our research will explore the efficacy and mechanisms of the effects of these compounds on complex brain-mediated behaviors such as sleep disruption. Recent studies have suggested that CBD may have therapeutic potential for sleep disorders. A small study published in the November 2013 issue of the Journal of Experimental Medicine suggests that CBD may be able to help people with chronic pain sleep better. The researchers gave 10 people with chronic pain who were using a vaporizer a 22% CBD oil that contained no THC for seven days. The subjects reported using fewer pain medications during the study period. CBD may have a positive effect on sleep because it has an anti-inflammatory effect..
