5 strains hitting menus in September

This month of The Drop, Dante Jordan’s column rounding up all the can’t-miss strains and dabs from the best brands and growers, looks at anticipated releases from Cactus Farms, Deep Creek Gardens, and more.

Another month, another batch of fresh cultivars from the gardens of brands we love.

Let’s get right to it — here are five strains hitting menus in September that you should definitely put in your pipe.

Cactus Farms: PYT Jack

PYT Jack is a strain from Travis Scott’s Cactus Farms, which is grown by Connected Cannabis in California and Arizona. The genetics aren’t out there, but judging by the purplish-green colors and that funky, gassy, sweet taste to it, I’d say that some Gelato lineage is definitely at play.

To be honest, it kind of smells and hits like Biscotti. Like, when I first smoked Biscotti, it was one of those highs that got me dumb stoned but didn’t necessarily have an uplifting or calming direction to it; I was just high as hell and hyperaware of my thoughts. That’s how PYT Jack hit for ya boy.

Cactus Farms originally released this strain back in July, but the second batch of it is coming in September. Hurry up and get it while you can. Connected strains tend to sell out immediately, and the same goes for literally anything connected to Travis Scott’s name.

Available: Arizona and California

No Mids: Goudaberry

No Mids in Washington be putting out some heat — a little high on the price end, but still heat, so you get what you pay for. In September, it’ll be coming out with a fresh drop of Goudaberry.

Goudaberry comes from exoticic Genetix, which is known for famous strains like Cookies and Cream and Grease Monkey. The indica-dominant hybrid is a cross of Red Pop and Rainbow Chip with a sweet-and-sour chem smell and taste. When asked how it smokes, No Mids’ team said, “Upon inhalation, you get what seems two be a “two-tone” flavor: you get a sour chem-like flavor on the front-end which smoothly transitions pretty quickly to a heavy sour berry flavor on the back-end.”

Goudaberry is expected to punch pretty hard on the effects side of things, so No Mids recommends it to people who have already built up a strong tolerance for high potency cannabis.

Available: Washington

Deep Creek Gardens: Kiwi

Man, listen. I spent last winter in Oregon, and when I was there I smoked one of the best strains I’ve ever smoked in my life: Kiwi from Deep Creek Gardens. It had this sweet floral flavor that leaves you smacking your lips after every puff, and the effects are so damn strong and uplifting that I always reserved it for my post-writing evening walks. Get it when the freshest batch touches shelves this month.

Kiwi is a cross of Ice Queen and Blue Heron bred by Dynasty Genetics. Your nose will detect all kinds of fruity flavors, brought forth by the terpenes farnesene, limonene, and terpinolene. It’s super loud, it’s super tasty, and the high absolutely smacks.

Deep Creek Gardens has been growing Kiwi for around three years, which lets you know how special it is. It’s one of the brand’s longer flowering buds. On the strain’s history, Deep Creek told me, “[Kiwi’s] original name was Ghetto Bird and we sold it in the Oregon market as G-Bird because of the negative connotations behind the name. It was named after a skateboarding trick, but it is also a police helicopter. Dynasty and us decided that Kiwi was a much better representation of the cultivar, its characteristics, and the energy we are cultivating.”

Available: Oregon

Malek’s Premium Cannabis: Strawberry Slurpee

Flavor. That’s where it starts and that’s where it ends with Malek’s small-batch cannabis. Back when I visited Denver in June, I copped some Malek’s Gushers from the Denver Cookies store and boyoyoyyyy was it the tastiest weed I’d had in quite some time. Just so damn fruity, and the smell really carried over to the taste. So I had to see what Malek’s had coming in September, and the answer is a first-time drop of Strawberry Slurpee, bred by Malek in collaboration with Breckenridge Organic Therapy.

Strawberry Slurpee is a sativa-dominant cross of XJ13 and StrawNana that’s been around for a couple of years. Malek Noueiry, the company’s owner and namesake, told me that it smells and tastes very bright and hazy, similar to an Amnesia Haze or Super Silver Haze on the nose. “It’s a very smooth smoke overall with lots of flavor from start to finish. In my opinion one of the most unique and consistent sativas available in Colorado currently.”

Strawberry Slurpee’s dominant terpenes are pinene and ocimene. It is a euphoric, uplifting high, perfect for any time of day.

Available: Colorado

Smash Hits: Da Funk

Da Funk is coming from the gardens of the Chemdog fella himself. It’s one of the first runs of the strain and is grown in a small-batch style. What that means is, Smash Hits grew it in a limited quantity to be able to focus on perfecting the cultivar and maximizing its chemical properties, i.e. smell, taste, effects, and overall experience.

Da Funk was bred by Compound Genetics. It comes from crossing First Class Funk with White Runtz Strain S1. According to Smash Hits, Da Funk hits your nose and tongue with a mix of mint-cream, heavy gas, and floral notes, backed by berry, citrus, and cookie undertones, all thanks to an abundance of caryophyllene, limonene, humulene, and linalool. The effects are expected to hit with a strong mental clarity and full-body relaxation. Snag it up if you’re in Massachusetts.

Available: Massachusetts
